Abstract   Estrogen receptor(ER) has been recognized as the important factor for decision of postoperative therapeutic regimen and prediction of prognosis of breast cancer patient. From June 1986 to December 1990, 60 patients of breast cancer were analysed ER by enzyme immunoassay technique at Peresbyterian Medical Center, Chonju, Korea. Among them, 22 patients have been followed for over 3 years. We evaluated their survival according to the relationships between ER status and tumor size and lymph node metastasis. ER positive was determined when the level of ER was more than 20 fentomoles/mg. Authors obtained the following results; 1) In premenopausal state, ER was positive 42.3/ and in postmenopausal, there was 55.5% ER positive. 2) The rate of ER pasitive was 85.7% in T1, 45.0% in T and 38.5% in T2 The larger tumor size, the lower rate of ER positive was noticed. 3) The rate of ER positive without lymph node metastasis was 41.2k, 60% ER positive in the case of 1-3 lymph node metastases and 56.3% ER positive when lymph node metastases were more than 4 nodes. 4) According to the pathologic stages, 83.3% ER positive in stage I, 40% ER positive in each stage IIa and lIb, 60% in stage IIIa, and 50% in stage IIIb. There was all ER negative in stage IV. 5) The overall 3-year survival rate of Z2 cases of breast cancer was 100% in the ER postiive group and 69.3% in the ER negative group. 6) The 3-year survival rate was 100 A in ER positive regardless of the tumor size and in the group of ER negative 3-year survivai rate was 100% in T75% in T; and 25% in T,. 7) In the group of ER positive, 3-year survival rate was 100% regardless of lymph node me- tastasis. 8) In the group of ER positive, 3-year survival rate was 87.5% when lymph node metastasis was absent and 25% when lymph node metastasis was present.
